What the GDPR means:

Governance: you need an internal structure for handling data protection.

Documentation: it is not enough to comply, you must also be able to document that you comply.

Data processing: every time you process personal data, you need a log or record containing certain information

Right to be forgotten: your customers and employees have the right to request that you delete all information you have on them, also from historical backups etc.

Right to data portability: your customers and employees can request all data you hold on them and you are obligated to provide it to them in a machine-readable format.

Privacy Impact Assessment: every time you make a technological change, you need to assess how it impacts data privacy.

Data breaches: for certain types of breaches, you will be obligated to inform your customers, employees, and/or local authorities.

Consent: a number of new requirements are introduced to how a customer or employee lawfully give you consent to use their data.
